You are so right ! Quinn (the owner) made to change from Frank Calder suggestion because the NHA was still “alive” so to avoid any legal procedure, he just create a new legal name with Quebec “Athletic” Club, instead of Quebec “Hockey” Club. Frank Calder also put down another line on the contract: The right to do anything he felt would be good for the league with the reborn concession. After de lone NHL 1919-1920 season, he transfered it to Hamilton… Thanks for your comments.

The thing about “Athletics” is that apparently that name was given to the team by P.Quinn when he brought them into the NHL for the 1919/20 season. Up until that point they were simply the Quebec HC. In the book “The Official National Hockey League 75Th Anniversary Commemorative Book” on page 26 it says

Quebec’s Athletic Bulldogs
The Quebec Bulldogs were two time stanley cup winners as a member of the NHA, but financial difficulties postponed their entry into the NHL until 1919-20, the new league’s third season of operation. The team that took to the ice in the NHL was formally named the Quebec Athletics, and numerous articles in newspapers of the day used this name. But the Bulldog name remained popular with the club’s fans, and though 1919-20 proved to be the clubs final season in Quebec, the fact that the club was called the Athletics has been almost entirely forgotten.

So I don’t think they were called “Athletics” until they joined the NHL in 1919.
